Volume 1, Chapter 1

Victor tells the story of his early life in Geneva. His father is a respected public man. His parents take in Elizabeth, whom he comes to love like a sister, and he has a close friend, Henry Clerval. As a boy he finds the old books of alchemy and is excited by them, and a storm in which lightning destroys an oak turns his mind towards science.
