Kanda 5 of 7
Sundara Kanda
Hanuman crosses the sea, finds Sita and burns parts of Lanka.
Hanuman grows to a great size and leaps across the sea. Along the way the mountain Mainaka rises to offer him rest, and he is tested by a serpent-mother, Surasa. He enters Lanka at night in a small form.
He searches Ravana's palace and the city without finding Sita. At last he finds her in a grove of ashoka trees, watched by Rakshasi guards. A guard named Trijata speaks up for her, and tells the others of a dream that foretells Ravana's fall.
Ravana comes to Sita and presses her to marry him. She refuses. When he leaves, Hanuman shows himself, gives her Rama's ring and tells her that Rama is searching for her. She gives him a jewel from her hair to carry back as a sign.
Hanuman destroys part of the grove and fights Ravana's guards and Ravana's son Aksha. He allows himself to be bound by Indrajit's weapon so he can speak to Ravana. He warns Ravana to return Sita. Ravana orders his tail to be set on fire, and Hanuman burns much of Lanka before he leaps back across the sea.
Hanuman rejoins the others and they go back to Kishkindha. He reports to Rama and hands over Sita's jewel. Rama weeps and holds it to his heart.
